Afrekete - Arara song

Here's a song I was working on with Garage Band yesterday.
The song starts on the 5th strike of the 7 stroke 6/8 bell.
I sang the fundamental and played bell simultaneously. Good practice, since it twists the bell around in your mind to sing so far on the back side of clave!
Then, over dubbed the 3rd and 5ths, then the akpon last.
It was transcribed from Lazaro Ros's CD Osayin.

anyone want to vid conference a drum lesson or just share some rhythms?

Hi guys, I recently got my vid conferencing working with skype.
You can go to skype.com to download the program for your platform. It works seamlessly between Mac and PC, which pretty much makes it alone in that regard.
This would be good for us folks that are a bit nerdy about technique, rhythm, and song and looking for a quick easy way to find out a new way to play something, or a new rhythm, or song right at your computer without charge!
My skype user name is windhorsey if anyone wants to add the contact and start a video chat.

Has anyone seen them? Impressions? Anyone know if Tony Allen is part of this group? (That would pretty much clinch it for me...)

Afrobeat from Iowa??

Believe it or not, the best Afrobeat I've heard in the last year or so has been from a band from Iowa--Euforquestra. They play impeccable Nigerian Afrobeat, but with subtle shadings of Afro-Cuban ritual rhythms. A fascinating idea, and it works tremendously well. I've never seen them live, but I'd sure like to. Their album "Adventures in Afrobeat" is well worth tracking down.

Ali Farka Touré: New prizes, nominations and tributes

Based on the critical acclaim of the professionals, Ali Farka Touré's posthumous album(Savane) has been chosen by Metacritic as the best album of 2006. The album is, likewise, nominated for a Grammy Award n the category 'Best Contemporary World Music Album'. Salif Keita and Richard Bona, The Klezmatics and Ladysmith Black Mambazo are also among the nominees. AFT is, likewise, nominated for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards.
http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/49th_Show/list.aspx

A homage will be paid to AFT in Mali (Bamako and Niafunke) on March 6, 7 and 8 next year. Activities include a mega concert on March 7 in a football stadium in Bamako. I don't have yet the confirmations, but the list of artists who have expressed great interest in performing is impressive. It includes Toumani Diabate, Oumou Sangare, Tinariwen, Afel Bocoum,Tartit, Manu Dibango, Youssou N'dour, Alpha Blondy, Bembeya Jazz, Ry Cooder, Marcus James, Boni Raitt, Peter Gabriel, Ramata Diakite, Boubacar Traore (Karkar), Habib Koita, Salif Keita , Baba Maal, Tiken Ja Fakoly, Carlos Santana, Tracy Chapman, Taj Mahal, Corey Harris, Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation...
The Festival in the Desert (11, 12 et 13 Janaury 2007) and the Festival on the Niger (1, 2, 3, 4 February 2007) will also pay homage to AFT.

His son, Vieux Farka Touré, is also an excellent musician. I’ve recently bought his self-titled debut album and its superb. It’s not yet officially released but it’s exclusively available via his label’s site. AFT plays on 2 tracks. I can honestly say that the father has passed the torch to the son; not only musically but also as far as social awareness is concerned...

Chopteeth are a Washington DC based band that I saw last night for the first time. (Unfortunately was not able to make the recent show where they opened up for Konono No.1) They played a free outdoor concert and they tore it up. Played a good mix of covers and some great original songs. If you are in the area or they come to your area, I would check them out!

Ali Farka Touré's posthumous CD released

I haven't been on Tribe for sometime now. So, greetings to all first.

Ali's posthumous CD, Savane, has just been released. The reviews are rave and it's already #12 in Amazon sales... Read more below.

----------

ALI FARKA TOURE
'Savane'

World Circuit Records is proud to announce the release of ‘Savane’, the last solo album by the legendary Malian singer and guitarist Ali Farka Touré. Recorded in Bamako with his specially assembled down-home ngoni group, ‘Savane’ is Ali’s testament, a powerful reaffirmation of his umbilical link to his Malian musical roots. Already acclaimed as his finest album, ‘Savane’ is both one of the most traditional and seemingly the most blues-drenched of Ali’s recordings. The record occupied Ali right into his last weeks, and he finally declared himself satisfied with it shortly before his death in March this year.

‘Savane’ completes World Circuit's Hotel Mandé trilogy. 'In the Heart of the Moon' an album of duets by Ali and Toumani Diabaté was awarded a GRAMMY, and the second part of the trilogy was Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra ‘Boulevard de l’Indépendance’.

Bringing American Afrobeat back to West africa first time ever!!!!

Hello everyone and happy holidays! A few of you may have already heard our big news, but we wanted you all to hear it straight from us:

APHRODESIA WILL TOUR GHANA AND WEST AFRICA IN FEBRUARY!!!
Yes, it's true. The African Showboyz (perhaps some of you caught our set with them at the Earthdance Festival in September) have invited us to tour Ghana, Togo, Benin and possibly Burkina Faso and Nigeria with them for one month. The tour is being booked now, and we have also just been invited to play the Africa Unite Festival (Bob Marley's 61st birthday celebration, produced in part by the Marley family: www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHome...rtikel.php in Accra and Kumasi, Ghana on Feb 3 and 5.
We are also arranging to travel in a biodiesel bus, helping to showcase and promote this alternative fuel in a part of the world that has been devastated by the environmental and social effects of the petroleum industry.
The chance to travel and play music and learn from the land that has inspired so much of our music is incredibly exciting and mind-boggling for us. The fact that we may be able also to help promote alternative energy in West Africa while doing it makes it all seem almost too good to be true....and in a way it is, because there's one catch:

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
We are in the process of raising the funds to help us make it to Ghana, and we have set up a donation page on our website-
www.aphrodesia.org/GonnagotoGhana.htm
Every little bit helps, so please consider us when you're making your lists and checking them twice....
Large donations can be tax-deductible through the Clean Fuel Caravan Coalition, please write us about that if you are interested. We are also soliciting sponsorships from sustainable businesses- if you are interested in that or know anyone who is, please write us about that too (contact@aphrodesia.org).

You can also, of course, help us by coming to any of our upcoming shows- www.aphrodesia.org/iastic.htm - including this Friday at the Elbo Room in SF, Dec 30 at the Anon Salon/String Cheese Incident party in SF, and NYE in Humboldt County at the Mateel Community Center!

What, you want more news? That wasn't enough? Sheesh!
All right, we've got brand new sweatshop-free t-shirts! Help us show everyone how cool they (and you) are by becoming an Aphrodesia celebrity model here (don't worry, it's easy)!!- www.aphrodesia.org/celebmodel.htm

We've got some cool new photos from some recent shows, and from a very funny night in a San Diego laudramat....

Aphrodesia is on Tribe and MySpace

They put on a thumpin' live show. The singer has a voice like David Byrne. And like afro-beat they have the essentials.

They've started out on the westcoast Canadian tour. They'll be coming out to BC in early December.
Last weekend we had a blast playing at the Sierra Nevada Music Festival, and celebrating our trumpeter Ashley DuVal’s 21st birthday with a show at Crystal Bay Casino in North Tahoe. Earlier in the month, we closed the Sacramento Heritage Festival and froze our butts off headlining the Shining Stars Festival in Selma, OR.

On Wed, June 27 Albino! will cram into the Boom Boom Room to play an after party for the Femi Kuti Fillmore show, across the street. Come see if we can really fit all 14 of us on that stage...

Also, don’t miss the nytimes.com’s killer interactive special on Fela Kuti, father of afrobeat:

Saw Antibalas last night. They rocked it hard. Showed more than just a kick ass afrobeat band. "ICE" took them out of afrobeat into dub, then to a crazy jazz fusion layered w/ harmonics and dropped it right back in gear. Only five horns but fronted like a dozen.
Some guy almost stopped the show when he indicted Frank Vincent Zappa during "order in the court"

APHRODESIA @ ELBO ROOM THIS FRIDAY

Aphrodesia’s “Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” Friday, March 11 at the Elbo Room, San Francisco

Aphrodesia, the explosive San Francisco-based afrobeat ensemble that made national headlines last summer by driving cross country in a vegetable oil-powered bus as part of the “Just Vote Tour”, will headline a “Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” on March 11 at the Elbo Room in San Francisco. All the band’s proceeds from the show will go towards its new vegetable oil powered bus, a converted city transit bus from Santa Clarita, California.

Born in San Francisco a little over two years ago, the 11-member Aphrodesia has won national accolades both for its music and its commitment to social activism. The East Bay Express picked the band’s first CD, “Shackrobeat Vol. 1”, as one of its top albums of 2003, and the band’s live performances have earned raves everywhere from the pages of Global Rhythm Magazine to Jambase.com. Meanwhile, the band’s “Just Vote Tour”, a nationwide voter registration-themed tour focusing primarily on swing states and landing in New York City during the Republican National Convention, deposited the band on the cover of USA Today, and the Bay Area-based Common Ground Magazine featured the band on its cover because of its commitment to driving on alternative fuel.

The band’s habit of driving in a vegetable oil-powered vehicle is more than just window dressing. “We want to walk the walk as well as talk the talk,” explains founder and bassist Ezra Gale. “We can’t be anti-war and pro-environment and drive around in a big petroleum-fueled tour bus,” he adds.

Aphrodesia’s old bus, a converted airport shuttle bus nicknamed the “Votemobile” for the cross-country ‘Just Vote Tour’, carried the band at least 10,000 miles solely on vegetable oil. The band plans to continue that tradition in its new bus, which is equipped with 300-gallon vegetable oil tanks and is considerably better suited to carrying a band of Aphrodesia’s size. To help pay the costs of the new bus and of converting it to run on vegetable oil, the band is throwing a “Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” at the Elbo Room on March 11, with all proceeds going towards the cost of the new bus.

“Veggie Oil Power Fundraiser” featuring Aphrodesia with DJ Oaty Love, Friday, March 11, at the Elbo Room, 647 Valencia,, SF, (415) 552-7788, 10PM- 2 AM; $7-$20 donation requested.

HYPNOMADIC feat. Soulsalaam storms up SF

HYPNOMADIC feat. Soulsalaam and Process Rebel is performing this Friday @ Elbo Room - You can get cheaper advance tickets here:
www.sunsettickets.com/evinfo.php

Hypnomadic is a modern urban dance floor hybrid of electronic beats and cultural elements featuring the dj/producer/musician team up of Soulsalaam and Process Rebel.

Having performed with Barbarito Torres of Buena Vista Social Club and Hamsa Lila at The Fillmore and at Red Bull's Ascension party at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco, Hypnomadic creates their own cinematic fusion sound. Grimey hip-hop, punchy dancehall, dirty breakbeats and rugged d'n'b all teased with ragga M.C.s, bhangratronic, vocal accapellas and live percussion with a touch of swirling dub effects. Imagine yourself dazzled by King Tubby's studio trickery gone mad!

As well as creating their own original tracks their remixes and reworks include such artists as Saul Williams (Ninja Tune Records), Muslimgauze, Mr. Oizo, MIA, Antibalas, M.C. Cantankerous, Kelis, Missy Elliot, Roots Manuva (Big Dada), Systemwide (BSI Records), Thug Emporium (Quake Trap Records, SF) and Erick Sermon (Def Jam).

PROCESS REBEL aka Chad Jones

if so...

afrobeat is so hard to mix. how do you tend to mix it?

if i can't beatmatch and do a quick blend (before the tempo changes!), i just tend to do a hard drop/cut. i was trying to go from manu dibango's 'new bell' (not exactly afrobeat, i know) to dan boadi's 'money is the root of evil' but was having trouble making the mix sound good.

suggestions or tips on how you mix afrobeat?

I can't get enough of this shit. EVERY SONG is BANANAS!!

...some Afrobeat, some classic funk (with vintage/modern production), some Jazz/Broken Beat/House with a lot of percussion, vintage dub techniques w/ reggae skanks and deep downtempo beats...just soulful shit throughout!

It's about to come out on Ubiquity,
but there are some promos floating around.
It's called "Mishaps Happening" ...COP IT IF YOU SEE IT!!

respects,

World Fusion Music

I am a huge fan of World Fusion music also known as World Beat, Ethno Techno, etc. There aren't many fans of this music yet in the United States and I hope to make connections with them. Would love to hear anyone into this great music. I DJ with two shows on the Web site CultureBeyondBorders.com and at venues in Chicago and Madison and am always looking for new music and new opportunities.
